With the release of WordPress version 3.0 one interesting concept has been added to WordPress’ feature list, Custom menus. Many user might find it bit confusing and hard using this functionality of WordPress, but believe me it’s one of the best and quite easy feature of WordPress. It gives you total control over what pages or categories you would like to show at your navigation, sidebar or at any other place on your site. One dedicated menu is given for this unique feature. You’ll find it at, Appearance->Menus on your wp-admin.

You’ll be taken to an interface where you’ll find quite a few options like, “Create Menu”, “Custom Links”, “Pages” and “Categories”. Just see below screenshot.

Now, from right side panel you can create custom menu. Give it some nice name and save it. Once menu is created, you can select items from left side panels Pages and Categories and by pressing “Add to Menu” button you can include them to your custom menu at right side. If you want to add any custom link with custom url inside your menu, you can add it from “Custom links” panel. Give it URL and label and add it to your menu. Just see the screenshot below.

So, you can add any type of link in to your custom menu, let it be page, category or any custom link. It’s really easy and hassle free. Also, its very easy to sort the menu items as well. By drag and drop you can sort it in order of your liking. After all your items are added save your custom menu. Now, you can add your custom menu anywhere in wordpress using widgets. You’ll find widget with the name Custom Menus in your widgets option panel. Just drag and drop it to place of your liking and its done.

So, what do you think, is it easy for you to play with your navigation and sidebar? I bet it is. Just play with it, you’ll enjoy it.
